LOS ANGELES -- USC coach Lane Kiffin made sure he would not be criticized for a conservative offense against Colorado. Quarterback Matt Barkley threw six touchdown passes and wide receiver Robert Woods caught four to lead No. 11 USC to a 50-6 victory over the Buffaloes at the Coliseum before an announced crowd of 83,204.
Barkley broke the USC and Pac-12 career records for touchdown passes while Woods broke the school and conference records for career receptions. Woods also set a USC single-game record with four touchdown catches.
"It's a special day," Barkley said. "It's definitely an honor. I think we all have a better feeling in our stomachs after this win."
Barkley's six touchdowns tied his own school record -- he threw six against Colorado last year. He finished the game 19 of 20 passing for 298 yards. Woods caught a season-high eight passes for 132 yards while wide receiver Marqise Lee added six catches for 103 yards.
"I don't see myself above those other great receivers," Woods said. "I see myself as part of them. It's really amazing to break the record this quickly."
It was an emphatic response following criticism during the week that the offense was too conservative in USC's 24-14 victory over Washington. Barkley threw only 20 passes in that game.
Barkley also set a Pac-12 record for completion percentage (95.0) and came with .8 of the NCAA record set by current USC assistant and former Tennessee quarterback Tee Martin.
Colorado (1-6, 1-3) showed some spunk offensively but could not get into the end zone. Buffaloes quarterback Jordan Webb completed 18 of 35 passes for 210 yards but threw three interceptions.
"Other than the penalties, our defense played great," Kiffin said.
But Kiffin was not happy with every aspect of the performance. He kept the Trojans (6-1, 4-1) on the field at halftime and yelled at the team about its penalties. Defensive tackle Leonard Williams punched a Colorado player and was ejected in the second quarter for a flagrant foul. The Pac-12 will review the play to determine if Williams will receive a suspension.
"I felt bad for our fans and our former players," Kiffin said. "That's not Trojan football."
It took USC only two plays to score as Barkley opened the game with a 55-yard touchdown pass to Lee.
The Buffaloes got down to the USC 21 on the ensuing possession but Webb's pass in the end zone was intercepted by Drew McAllister.
The Trojans quickly followed with another score as Barkley found Woods on the sideline for a 39-yard touchdown and a 13-0 lead. Barkley recorded his third touchdown of the quarter on an eight-yard pass to tight end Xavier Grimble.
