Avalanche's' Downie out for the season

Colorado Avalanche forward Steve Downie will have surgery to repair a torn anterior-cruciate ligament in his right knee and will miss the rest of the season, the team announced Wednesday.

Downie was injured in the second period of Tuesday's 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings.

Downie, 25, had one assist in two games this season. He had two goals and 11 assists for Colorado last season.

Forward Brad Malone will be called up from Lake Erie of the AHL to replace Downie on the roster, according to the Denver Post.
