LONDON (AP) -- Mel Rippon scored the last penalty in the shootout and Australia beat China 20-18 Sunday to advance to the semifinals in women's Olympic water polo.
After Gao Ao's shot hit the left post for China's second miss of the penalty shootout, Rippon sent the ball past goalkeeper Yang Jun to put Australia through.
China almost pulled off the upset in regular time, but Holly Lincoln-Smith scored on a back-hook with 35 seconds to play in the fourth to tie the game at 14-14 and force overtime. That finished at 16-16, forcing the penalty shootout.
