Welcome to the August third baseman rankings. Players are ranked based on how I believe they will perform in 5x5 leagues over the remainder of the season.
Third Baseman Rankings
Dropping off: Jordan Pacheco (No. 31), Danny Valencia (No. 34), Ian Stewart (No. 37), Kevin Frandsen (No. 39)
- If Alex Rodriguez is allowed to play through his appeal of a Biogenesis suspension -- and it sounds like he will be -- then he'll come off the DL on Monday and he'll be worth trying in shallow mixed leagues. At least for the next few weeks, I'd rank him 14th or 15th among third basemen.
- The Mets are playing it safe and going with Justin Turner at third base for now, but they have Wilmer Flores and Zach Lutz available to fill in for David Wright if they wish. Flores has played second base this year, even though he makes more sense at third; obviously, that's because he has Wright ahead of him at the hot corner. The Mets probably wouldn't shift him over to fill in for Wright, but they could put Daniel Murphy at third if they wanted to take a look at Flores. He's hitting .322/.357/.526 with 14 homers for Triple-A Las Vegas. Lutz is less interesting, but he might offer a little more pop than Turner and no further infield movement would be required. He's hit .282/.361/.471 at Las Vegas's third baseman.
- Luis Valbuena's hamstring injury got him put on the DL on Sunday. It would have been a grand opportunity for Mike Olt to make his Cubs debut, except Olt has gone 4-for-43 with no extra-base hits for Iowa since coming over from Texas in the Matt Garza trade. The Cubs think his general malaise this year is a result of the concussion he sustained playing winter ball, though he did manage to have one good month for Triple-A Round Rock before the deal. Obviously, the Cubs won't promote him while he's struggling, so they'll go with Logan Watkins and Cody Ransom at third base for now. Junior Lake can also play there, but it looks like he'll remain in the outfield. Olt is ranked No. 37 over at first base.
