Welcome to the August starter rankings. As always, players are ranked based on how I believe they will perform in 5x5 scoring over the rest of the season. Along with the position rankings, you'll find a fully updated top 300 list.

 Starting pitcher Rankings

Dropping off: Tim Hudson (No. 55), Ross Detwiler (No. 89), Robbie Erlin (No. 103), Ted Lilly (No. 106), Roy Oswalt (No. 107), Joe Blanton (No. 110), David Phelps (No. 116), Jason Hammel (No. 119), Jordan Lyles (No. 126), Shaun Marcum (No. 128), Kevin Gausman (No. 129), Aaron Harang (No. 136), Brandon Morrow (No. 137), Zach Britton (No. 141), Nick Tepesch (No. 146), Jerome Williams (No. 147). Kevin Slowey (No. 149), Barry Zito (No. 150)

  • Jake Peavy would have moved back up this month regardless, but the trade to the Red Sox helps his fantasy value a bit, too. Even though Fenway is a better park for run scoring than U.S. Cellular, it surrenders many fewer homers, and it's the home run ball that has been Peavy's bugaboo this season. He's also looking at getting considerably better run support now.
  • The other traded pitchers get boosts, as well. Ian Kennedy likely would have dropped into the 90s this month had he remained with the Diamondbacks, but now with Petco aiding him, I've bumped him up from No. 80 in July to No. 71 now. Bud Norris merely climbs from No. 92 to No. 86. Yes, he's looking at more run support, but he'll be pitching in Camden Yards and in the tough AL East. I'm still not fond of him as a mixed-league starter.
  • So, if Jose Fernandez is a top-20 starter for six more starts, what's that worth? Of course, even the most minor of arm twinges could get him shut down for the year before he approaches 170 innings. We'll see. Obviously, I've misaccounted for the early shutdown date at every step so far.
  • Brandon Beachy was lit up in his first start back from Tommy John surgery, but he got quite a bit better as his second start went along and his velocity is fine. He'll regain better feel for the offspeed pitches, and he should continue to improve from here. He's a borderline mixed-league starter at the moment, but he might be a pretty good one come September.
