Welcome to the August second baseman rankings. As always, players are ranked based on how I believe they will perform in 5x5 scoring over the rest of the season. I try to list players at the positions at which they're most valuable, so if you can't find that second baseman you're looking for, check shortstop instead. Included along with the position rankings you'll find a fully updated top 300 list.
Second Baseman Rankings
Dropping Off: Johnny Giavotella (No. 28), Jordany Valdespin (No. 34), Jemile Weeks (No. 40)
- It wasn't a great July for second basemen; the only two full-timers to finish with OPSs over .800 were Robinson Cano at .909 and Matt Carpenter at .806. Eric Sogard, listed here as a shortstop, did manage to come in at .826 in 61 at-bats in his platoon role. Cano and Daniel Murphy were the most valuable second basemen for fantasy purposes.
- Unless the Rangers change their minds about playing Jurickson Profar in the outfield, it's hard to see how he'll be an asset in mixed leagues. Profar did homer Friday, but that followed a July in which he hit .213 with no homers, no steals, two runs scored and two RBI in 47 at-bats. He's better than that, but he's probably not a difference maker right now.
- The Rockies played Charlie Culberson in the outfield on Saturday, but they have nothing to lose by giving him a long look at second base over D.J. LeMahieu down the stretch. The 23-year-old hit .310/.338/.524 with 14 homers and 13 steals for Triple-A Colorado Springs before his callup, and while that's a great place for offense, he was still at .298/.326/.512 on the road. I'm not all that optimistic that he's a future regular, but then, I'm even more skeptical about LeMahieu.
