Here are the August Rankings. Players are ranked for the remainder of the season based on how I believe they’ll perform in 5x5 leagues. Players are also listed at the positions where they’re most valuable, so if you don’t see that third baseman you’re looking for, he’s probably listed at second or short.

While Huston Street and Joakim Soria moved on earlier this month, there were no deadline deals to shake up the closer ranks. There are few situations in much doubt at the moment, though Zach Putnam could again challenge Jake Petricka for saves in Chicago once he comes off the disabled list.
Of course, Jonathan Papelbon figures to clear waivers, making him a trade candidate this month. I still think it’s unlikely that he goes, but if he does, Ken Giles would be worth a shot in the closer’s role. Joaquin Benoit probably won’t clear waivers completely, but he could make it to the Dodgers, opening up the possibility of a trade there. Chad Qualls is another possible waiver deal candidate; the Astros made it clear before the deadline that it’d take a lot to move him, but they may soften their stance now that Josh Fields is pitching so well in a setup role and bring Mike Foltynewicz up for a look in short relief.
For some reason, Soria has struggled mightily since arriving in Detroit. When that deal was made, I probably would have had Soria ahead of Joe Nathan for the rest of the season, even though the Tigers said they were standing by their man. Now, though, Nathan looks pretty safe, barring a multi-outing meltdown.
