Atlante on brink of relegation from Liga MX

Historic Liga MX club Atlante will be playing second-division soccer next season, unless a minor miracle occurs.

Los Potros could still survive if they win their last two games, while Puebla loses theirs, but the Cancun-based team would also have to overturn a deficit of 28 goals.

Atlante needed a victory on Sunday against Santos Laguna to capitalize on Puebla’s 1-0 loss to America earlier in the day and close the gap to three points, but Los Guerreros won 4-3 to all but seal Los Potros’ fate.

It will be the fourth time Atlante, which turns 98 on Friday, has been relegated from the first division.

Despite the likelihood of relegation, there is the outside scenario that Atlante keeps its place in the first division thanks to irregularities in other clubs.

Queretaro’s situation remains unresolved and with the club currently in the hands of the Mexican government, the most likely outcome is that it will be sold to a new owner, which could open the door to Atlante’s current ownership buying the team and relocating to Cancun.

Then there is Atlante’s official complaint about the purchase of Atlas by TV Azteca, which the club said contravened Liga MX rules.

For now, though, it looks like Atlante is going down.
