Atlanta Falcons-Oakland Raiders Week 6 Preview: Fan’s Take

Yahoo Contributor Network

The Atlanta Falcons are flying high heading into their week six showdown with the Oakland Raiders. They are 5-0 this season, including three wins against the AFC West and back-to-back fourth quarter comebacks. The 1-3 Raiders are coming off a bye, but were left with a bad taste in their mouth after a 37-3 drubbing by the Denver Broncos. Which team has the edge heading into this week six matchup?

The Falcons are led by the talented fifth-year quarterback out of Boston College, Matt Ryan. Ryan was the NFC Offensive Player of the Month in September and followed that up with a solid performance in their week five victory against the Washington Redskins to open up October. Ryan threw for 345 yards and two touchdowns, giving him 1,507 yards and 13 touchdowns on the season. He is at, or near the top, of most quarterback rankings and is beginning to show that he is ready to be considered an elite quarterback.

The Raiders have been a disappointing club once again. They have the talent to succeed, but can't find a way to get in any sort of offensive or defensive rhythm. One week, Carson Palmer will be solid like he was in week three against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and then he'll follow it up with a mediocre performance like he did the following week against the Broncos. The one positive about Palmer this season is he has thrown just two interceptions, compared to 16 in 10 games a year ago.

One thing that will set these two teams apart this week is the ability to spread the ball downfield. Atlanta's offense is so deep with Julio Jones, Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez all at or above 16 receptions. Add in Michael Turner, who many said was done, and his ability to still move the ball (scored go-ahead touchdown vs. Washington) and the Falcons offense may be too much to handle. The Raiders have offensive weapons too, but the Falcons defense, led by Thomas DeCoud and Sean Weatherspoon are playing with a purpose under Defensive Coordinator Mike Nolan.

The Falcons and Raiders will meet at the Georgia Dome on Sunday, October 14 at 1 p.m. ET. Television coverage will be on CBS.
