After losing the preseason opener to the Baltimore Ravens, the Atlanta Falcons dropped to another AFC opponent. The Cincinnati Bengals took out the Falcons 24-19, improving their preseason record to 2-0. Of course, it is still only preseason football, but which Atlanta players excelled in the loss?
This is the make or break season for Ryan and the Falcons. After struggling in all three postseason appearances, Ryan needs to find a way to get the Falcons a postseason victory. If his performance in the loss to the Bengals is any indication, he may have the right makeup to advance deep into the playoffs. He completed 18-of-21 passes for 174 yards, including a two-yard strike to Lousaka Polite to tie the game at 10 in the second quarter.
Competing with Chris Redman for the backup job behind Ryan, Davis, an undrafted free agent from East Carolina, had a solid performance. He completed 11-of-18 passes for 121 yards with a fourth quarter score to Lamark Brown. Redman played well in the losing effort, completing 10-of-15 passes for 106 yards, but threw the only interception of the game.
As White continues to attempt and prove that he is as elite of a wide receiver in the sport as anyone else, he continues to impress with his ability to have big games. If he can reduce the number of drops in the upcoming season, he may finally get the recognition he deserves. He made four catches for 54 yards in the loss, including a team-long 24 yard grab.
The main players for the Falcons didn't get a chance to prove themselves for much time in the game, but that will change in the next game. The team will travel to Miami to take on the 0-1 Dolphins. Ryan, Michael Turner, White, Julio Jones and Tony Gonzalez are all likely to see a lot of playing time in a game that will show the coaching staff exactly what they have to look forward to this season.
