Just last week, it seemed as though the Atlanta Braves were ready for a postseason run. They were just a couple games behind the Washington Nationals for first place in the National League East. Then the Braves dropped 2-of-3 to the Los Angeles Dodgers and another two to the Nationals. After losing the opening game of their four-game series with the San Francisco Giants, the Braves will turn to Ben Sheets to get them back into the win column. Ryan Vogelsong will oppose Sheets on the mound, but which team has the edge?
Sheets started his comeback run back with great success winning his first three starts. He allowed just one earned run in 18 innings with 15 strikeouts. He has since fallen on hard times, losing three of his past four starts, but coming into this start; he is still 4-3 with a 3.07 ERA. He has limited the opposition to a .257 BAA and has a 1.20 WHIP. In his career against the Giants, he is 4-3 with a 2.34 ERA and has three complete games with one shutout.
Vogelsong is coming into the game with a 10-7 record and 2.85 ERA. He has recorded 117 strikeouts and 51 walks in 148 2/3 innings. He has been one of better pitchers for the Giants this season and has helped the team remain in the playoff hunt during the well-documented struggles of Tim Lincecum. Vogelsong has made just two appearances in his career against the Braves, including one start, and has been lights out. He has gone 9 1/3 innings with just one earned run allowed on six hits with nine strikeouts.
