Athletics-Tyson Gay overshadowed in 100m heats at U.S. trials

EUGENE, Oregon, June 25 (Reuters) - American record holder Tyson Gay easily qualified but was overshadowed in the preliminaries of the 100 metres at the U.S. world championships trials on Thursday. Gay, bidding to make his first world team since 2009, was second in his heat to newcomer Remontay McClain with a fast but wind-assisted time of 9.85 seconds. McClain clocked 9.82 seconds with a big wind of 4.9 metres per second. Collegian Trayvon Bromell was even faster in his heat, which was run in acceptable wind limits, as he cruised to a winning time of 9.84 seconds. The semi-finals and finals of the men's and women's 100 metres are scheduled for Friday. The top three finishers in each event at the trials qualify for the August world championships in Beijing.
