The Oakland Athletics acquired right-handed batting catcher Geovany Soto from the Texas Rangers for cash considerations. Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish was first to confirm the report by a twitter user named Mark Madson:

There has not been word on a corresponding roster move, however, the three-catcher roster has been playing more like a two-catcher one, and a hurt one at that. Stephen Vogt has had foot problems for some time and has not been behind the dish since July 7, and All-Star Derek Norris has dealt with back problems that have occasionally kept him out of games this year. It is entirely possible one of these two may be going on the disabled list.

The 2008 National League Rookie of the Year has had extremely limited playing time with the Rangers this season after missing the first 95 games of the season recovering from right knee surgery. He missed 15 more games soon after his activation with a right groin injury.

Soto is batting .237/.237/.368 in 38 plate appearances, and in 2013 batted .245/.328/.466 in 184 plate appearances. In Soto's career against left-handed pitching, he is .283/.376/.483 in 704 plate appearances, though he has not achieved a left-handed on-base split above .310 since achieving a .296/.410/.561 line against lefties in 2011 with the Chicago Cubs.
