Astros name Porter as manager

The Houston Astros announced Thursday that Washington Nationals third-base coach Bo Porter will be their new manager.

Porter will remain with the Nationals through the remainder of the regular season and playoffs.

"His sense of urgency and skill set are very impressive," Astros owner Jim Crane said at a news conference in Houston.

General manager Jeff Luhnow said Porter was the only candidate to receive a job offer, according to the Houston Chronicle.

"He is a natural born leader," Luhnow said. "He is very charismatic. He is a motivational speaker.

"People want to follow him. He will also not accept anything less than 100 percent effort. With a young team, expectations have to be high."

Porter is in his sixth season as a major-league coach, including the past two with the Nationals. A former outfielder, he played three seasons in the majors.

"I'm just honored I'm the one they all decided and were all in agreement that I'm the man for the job," Porter said during a teleconference.
