COMMENTARY | With Arsenal F.C. looking to bolster their front line in this summer's transfer market, there have been a number of talented strikers being linked to the north London club. Real Madrid's Gonzalo Higuaín, and Fiorentina's Stevan Jovetić have been the most talked about front men to join the Gunners this summer. While securing one of these two top tier players would be a fantastic signing for Arsenal, there has been a bit of a doubt with both of them.
It has been reported that Real Madrid has agreed to terms with Juventus to sell Gonzalo Higuaín to the Italian champions for around £19 million. However, this report was downplayed by the player's brother (and agent). Even though a deal to Juventus has not even been finalized, it seems extremely possible that Higuaín could very well be playing in Turin for Juventus in the years to come.
Seemingly Arsenal's first choice transfer, Stevan Jovetić, is up for sale from his current club, Fiorentina. However, his agent told the press that Jovetić would prefer to stay in Italy (but not necessarily keep playing for Fiorentina). In saying this, it seems hard to believe that Fiorentina would want to sell their best player to a rival team such as Juventus, when there are other quality offers from clubs outside of Italy. But, there is a definite possibility that Arsenal may not sign their number one target in Jovetić this off season.
If, by chance, Arsenal could not sign either Higuaín or Jovetić, who should they look to next? Aston Villa's star striker, Christian Benteke, has been another player that has been linked to the Gunners in the British press. He arrived to the Birmingham, England squad just last summer from Belgian club Genk. He has certainly impressed not only Villa fans, but Premier League fans all over the world in his first season with Aston Villa. Benteke scored a total of 23 goals in all competitions during the 2012-2013 season. While the 6'3" striker may not be the "sexy" name that Arsenal fans have been hoping for this summer, the Belgium international is an imposing player, who is creative up front, and lethal with his right foot.
Christian Benteke also has Premier League experience going for him. He started 32 matches in England's top league, while making appearances as a sub in 2 matches. It also seems as if Benteke is ready to leave Aston Villa, and he appears to favor London. The towering striker has proclaimed his love for Arsenal, and even thought Aston Villa was a London based club when he signed for the team last summer.
While Benteke might be Arsenal's third or fourth choice in the transfer market, I don't believe he would be that much of a drop off from the aforementioned Higuaín and Jovetić. The youngest of the three forwards, Benteke would also possibly be a bit cheaper than Higuaín and Jovetić as well. Arsenal could do a lot worse if they were to sign Christian Benteke to man their front line in the future.
