Fresh off declaring his intentions to play with the USA internationally, AZ striker Aron Johannsson scored a goal and added an assist in AZ's Eredivisie opener Saturday, a 4-2 loss to Heerenveen.
With his team down a goal, Johannsson supplied a nice assist for Mattias Johansson in the 50th minute. The AZ defense couldn't hold up, however, and conceded twice before the Cheese Farmers drew a penalty kick in the 88th minute.
The 22-year-old striker stepped up and buried the penalty in off the post to make the score 3-2, but it wasn't enough as Heerenveen added a late insurance goal to ensure the win in both teams' league opener.
After representing Iceland at the youth level, the Alabama-born Johannsson recently filed a one-time switch to represent the USA at the senior level. If FIFA approves the move in time, he'll be on the USA's roster for its friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Aug. 14
