Arizona rookie Corbin does it all in victory over Giants

PHOENIX - About the only thing Arizona rookie left-hander Patrick Corbin could not do Sunday was talk himself into a complete game.

"You never want to come out of a game, especially when you are throwing well, but I understand," Corbin said after pitching a career-high eight innings and driving in four runs in the Diamondbacks' 10-2 victory over San Francisco.

"Maybe in a couple of years I will say something to Gibby (manager Kirk Gibson)."

Corbin's bases-loaded triple broke a 2-2 tie in a five-run fourth inning, and he singled in a run in the seventh. They were his first career RBIs.

Corbin (6-7) gave up eight hits and struck out five to prevent the NL West-leading Giants from a three-game sweep. He broke a three-game losing streak while beating the Giants for the second time at Chase Field this season.

"He pitched to both sides of the plate. He had a little run with his fastball, mixed the changeup in and threw the slier when he needed to as well," said San Francisco MVP candidate Buster Posey, who singled in a run in the first inning off Corbin and also drew a walk.

The Giants (83-63) maintained a 7 1/2-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West with 16 games to play when the Dodgers' lost to St. Louis 5-2 in 12 innings on Sunday. St. Louis (77-70) has a one-game lead over the Dodgers for the second NL wild card while the D-backs (72-74) remained 4 1/2 games behind in the wild card race. The D-backs must pass five teams in the final 2 1/2 weeks to reach the postseason.

Right fielder Justin Upton drove in three runs for the D-backs with a two-run double in the third inning and a bases-empty home run in the sixth inning, his 15th homer of the season. He also homered in the Giants' 3-2 victory Saturday.

San Francisco center fielder Angel Pagan singled, doubled and scored. Since Aug. 15, Pagan is hitting .333 with 11 doubles, six triples and 11 RBIs. The Giants are 19-10 in that stretch.

Aaron Hill had two hits, including a two-run double to cap the five-run fourth inning. Paul Goldschmidt reached on an infield error to open the inning before Cody Ransom doubled and Gerardo Parra was intentionally walked.

Leadoff hitter Adam Eaton singled and walked three times, scoring after walks in the third and fourth innings, when the D-backs scored seven runs off Giants right-hander Ryan Vogelsong (12-9). Eaton has reached base via hit or walk in nine of his 10 games since joining the team from Class AAA Reno on Sept. 4. Vogelsong is winless in three starts against the D-backs this season, giving up 13 earned runs in 13 2/3 innings.

"I can't say I missed location today. The only pitch I missed location was Upton's first double," Vogelsong said. "On Corbin's (triple), I just spotted it in the middle. The balls came out good; that is why it is getting perplexing. My stuff is there. It just doesn't make much sense right now."

Vogelsong has given up 20 earned runs in his last in 18 2/3 innings.

"The good news is he is healthy and he has shown how well he can throw at times but he is fighting himself a little bit," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "It is a down period right now but he will come out of this. If I saw something that would make me want to skip him, sure, but his stuff is good."

Pagan set a San Francisco record with his 13th triple of the season Saturday and almost had No. 14 as the first batter Sunday, but his long fly down the left field line one-hopped into the D-backs' bullpen for a ground rule double. Posey's two-out single made it 1-0. Pagan broke the triples record set by Willie Mays (1960) and tied by Steve Finley (2006).

NOTES: San Francisco left fielder Gregor Blanco was held out of the lineup with a left shoulder injury, Bochy said. Blanco was to be examined by the team doctor. Blanco, who was 0-for-7 while starting the first two games of the series, had started 19 of 28 games since Melky Cabrera's suspension. Justin Christian started in left field while Xavier Nady (hamstring) continues to recover. ... D-backs left fielder Jason Kubel was held out of the lineup while in an 8-for-55 skid. Kubel, who leads the D-backs with 29 homers and 86 RBIs, is hitting .157 with seven homers and 14 RBIs since Aug. 1. ... The D-backs will have their fourth off day in the last 12 on Monday. ... Giants left-hander Madison Bumgarner (14-10, 3.32 ERA) will start the opener of a four-game series against Colorado at AT&T Park on Monday. Bumgarner is 2-0 with a 3.57 ERA in three starts against the Rockies this season and 1-1 with a 1.04 ERA against them in four career starts at AT&T Park. ... Despite the loss Sunday, the Giants are 9-0-1 in the last 10 road series, their best road run since 1968, when they went 6-0-4 from July 18 to Sept. 8.
