Jacksonville State coach Bill Clark is taking over the program at UAB, a person with knowledge of the decision said on Tuesday.

The person spoke to The Associated Press Tuesday on condition of anonymity because UAB hasn't announced the hiring.

Jacksonville State athletic director Warren Koegel said in a statement that Clark told him Tuesday he had taken another job. UAB said in a news release that the Blazers will announce their new coach Wednesday afternoon. first reported the hire.

Clark led the Gamecocks to the quarterfinals of the Football Championship Subdivision during his lone season at the school.

He replaces Garrick McGee, who left to become Bobby Petrino's offensive coordinator at Louisville after going 5-19 in two seasons.

Clark spent five seasons as South Alabama's defensive coordinator. The Jaguars ranked second in the Sun Belt Conference in total defense in 2012, the team's first full season competing in the league.

Clark led Prattville to two straight Class 6A state championships and 30 consecutive wins in his final two seasons before leaving for South Alabama in 2008. He posted a 107-11 record in nine seasons, a 90.7-percent winning percentage, at Prattville.

Koegel pledged to hire a replacement quickly and said his primary concern is for the players' ''well-being and their success as college student-athletes.''

''I have always been proud to say honesty, respect, loyalty, trust and integrity are the way we run our athletic department at Jacksonville State University,'' Koegel said. ''Loyalty to the players and team, honesty and respect are the upmost importance to me, my staff, our board of trustees and to our President, Dr. Bill Meehan.''
