Anthony Smith is now being charged with a total of four murders. He had already been tried for one murder, which was going to be retried, but the other three were new. All three allegedly involve kidnapping and fatal shootings. It is believed that the murders took place approximately one year after Smith's retirement from the NFL. Smith had been a part of the Oakland Raiders' defense from 1990 until his retirement in 1998. Though he may be facing serious charges, he is not the first Oakland Raiders player to have faced legal problems.
It was allegedly William Joseph that brought Michael Bennett into a scheme that involved fraudulently obtained loans and tax returns. The two were arrested and charged along with six other individuals in 2012. Joseph was with the Raiders from 2007 until his retirement in 2010. Bennett joined the Raiders in 2010 and retired in 2011.
After a positive drug test in 2004, Barret Robbins' career with the Raider was over. Later that year, he was allegedly arrested for assault. After a lengthy list of fight and substance abuse related arrests, he ended up being sentenced to five years in jail in 2011. In 2010, he allegedly broke probation by having crack in his vehicle.
In 2012, Rolando McClain was sentenced to 180 days in jail. His charges stemmed from an incident in Alabama where he and another man were involved in a physical altercation with another individual. This occurred in late 2011. Allegedly, McClain shot a firearm during the altercation. McClain is going to be heading into his third season with the Oakland Raiders.
Darrius Heyward-Bey had been with the Raiders since he was drafted in 2009. In 2012, he was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. He had planned to plead not guilty and fight the charges.
In early 2011, JaMarcus Russell was arrested for having prescription medication without a valid prescription. Though he had been the top draft pick in 2007, he had not performed as well as expected and was cut from the team in 2010. He was 24 at the time of his arrest.
In early 2011, Louis Murphy was allegedly found with Viagra, though he did not have a prescription for the drug. His other charges included resisting arrest. He first joined the Raiders in 2009 and is currently a wide receiver for the team.
Samson Satele was with the Raiders from 2009 until 2011 when he was traded to the Indianapolis Colts. Shortly before he was officially traded to the Colts, he had been arrested for alleged disorderly conduct. He was arrested in Hawaii.
Michael Bush had been with the Oakland Raiders from 2008 until 2012, when he was traded to the Chicago Bears. While with the Raiders in early 2011, he was allegedly caught driving under the influence. He was released shortly after his arrest.
