Angels' Wilson snaps 11-start winless streak
There are winless streaks, and then there are winless streaks.
"You have to look at a winless streak and maybe peel off a couple layers," Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia said of C.J. Wilson's 11-start stretch without a victory, which ended with a 10-3 win over the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday. "If you're throwing the ball well, pitching up to your capabilities and you go through a stretch and the wins aren't coming, that's one thing. C.J. was not throwing the ball well.
"I think that's step one ... getting his stuff back, putting pitches together and pitch effectively. Then worry about wins. C.J. just wasn't giving him or us a chance to win games for that stretch. He came out tonight and he was pitching with purpose early. The big lead helped him, and it was a step forward."
Wilson snapped the longest winless skein of his career as a starter by throwing six innings of three-run ball. The win was his first since June 26 at Baltimore. In the intervening 11 starts, Wilson had a 6.09 ERA, and batters were hitting .281 against him.
He was hardly dominant against the Red Sox, allowing eight hits, walking two and retiring the side in order just once. However, he said he took a step forward in mid-start last week against the Red Sox when he stopped overthrowing and tried to focus on "simplifying a lot of stuff."
"I got a little amped up, trying to do too much," Wilson said. "My thing was I didn't have a lot of luck in July, and I tried to make so many adjustments that I lost my feel for what makes my pitches work.
"In the quest for trying to be better, you can go too far in one direction and overcorrect."
