Angels give Chad Cordero a minor league contract

The SportsXchange

Two-and-a-half years since he last pitched in the major leagues, Chad Cordero is attempting a comeback. The right-handed reliever signed a minor league deal Wednesday with the Los Angeles Angels.

Cordero, 30, will join the Angels' minor league spring camp.

The Southern California native, a Cal State Fullerton alumnus, wrote on Twitter, "Can't believe I might have a chance 2 play for my hometown team."

An All-Star closer for the Washington Nationals in 2005, Cordero saw his career go off track due to shoulder injuries after undergoing shoulder surgery in 2008. He pitched just six games for Washington in 2008 before getting hurt, and he made a brief return to the majors in 2010 with the Seattle Mariners, going 0-1 with a 6.52 ERA.

Cordero pitched for Toronto's Triple-A affiliate in 2011, when he also had a stint with St. Paul in the independent American Association. He didn't pitch at all last year.
