DETROIT -- Albert Pujols hit a go-ahead double in the top of the 10th inning, and the Los Angeles Angels completed a three-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers with a 3-1 victory on Thursday.
Mike Trout had four hits for the Angels, who have beaten the Tigers nine straight times, including these three at Comerica Park. Kevin Jepsen (1-2) pitched one inning of scoreless relief and Ernesto Frieri recorded his 19th save.
J.B. Shuck led off the 10th with a single off Phil Coke (0-5) and went to third on a Trout single. Pujols followed with his blast to the centerfield wall. Josh Hamilton followed an intentional walk to Howie Kendrick with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.
Angels starter Jered Weaver and the Tigers' Doug Fister dueled for seven innings and departed with the game tied at 1. Weaver allowed four hits and struck out six while Fister surrendered seven hits and struck out four.
It was Weaver's first start at Comerica since he was ejected July 31, 2011 for throwing a pitch over the head of Tigers catcher Alex Avila.
Detroit's Miguel Cabrera doubled in the third, extending his hitting streak to 12 games.
The Angels had runners in scoring position in the ninth, but Joaquin Benoit struck out Erick Aybar. The Tigers left a runner on second during the bottom of the inning when Jepsen retired Andy Dirks on a flyout.
Both clubs used three singles to get on the scoreboard. Brayan Pena knocked in Victor Martinez to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the second. Brad Hawpe tied it by bringing home Hamilton in the fourth.
Notes. Trout's four hits gave him an American League-best 37 for the month of June. ... Angels RHP Tommy Hanson was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday, retroactive to June 21, with a right forearm strain. LHP Michael Roth was recalled from Double-A Arkansas. Hanson, 4-2 with a 5.10 ERA, was scratched from his scheduled start on Wednesday after feeling tightness while warming up in the bullpen. Roth was 2-2 with a 3.61 ERA in 10 appearances with Arkansas. ... Los Angeles 2B Howie Kendrick made just his second start in the cleanup spot in 880 career games and went 0 for 4 with an intentional walk. ... Detroit begins an 11-game road trip at Tampa Bay on Friday, while Los Angeles plays a weekend series at Houston. ... Tigers' RHP Anibal Sanchez, who is on the disabled list with a right forearm strain, threw 40 pitches off the mound on Thursday. Sanchez will have another throwing session on Monday and hopes to return next weekend.
