After being unable to call Dana White in time to save UFC 151, Anderson Silva was able to cash in on his chance to save another card, this time in front of his home crowd. Earlier this week, Jose Aldo and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson were forced off the UFC 153 card due to injury. That left a huge hole in the main event and the co-main event and in an event that already lost Vitor Belfort, Alan Belcher and Eric Koch; the need for someone like Silva to headline was obvious. That is exactly what will happen as Silva will return to the light heavyweight division to take on the American Psycho, Stephan Bonnar.
With 16 straight victories - including 15 inside the Octagon - Silva is showing that he is afraid of no challenge. He was most recently seen shutting down Chael Sonnen for a second time and has been linked to a possible mega-fight (see link below) with UFC welterweight champion, Georges St-Pierre. It will be the third time Silva has competed in the division as a member of the UFC roster. In 2008, he knocked out James Irvin and in 2009; Forrest Griffin suffered the same fate.
For Bonnar, it will be his first fight since last November when he defeated Kyle Kingsbury by unanimous decision. It was his third straight victory and his eighth overall in the UFC.
Silva and Bonnar weren't the only fighters added to the UFC 153 lineup, as Fabio Maldonado was added as a replacement to fight his fellow countrymen, Glover Teixeira in the co-main event. Teixeira was set to fight Jackson in what was going to be the biggest fight of his career, but instead fights the 18-5 Maldonado who has lost two straight fights to Igor Pokrajac and Kingsbury. Maldonado was originally scheduled to compete at UFC 154, but will have to speed his training program a bit to get ready for the event.
