Anderson set to return for A's in Game 3

The SportsXchange

With the Oakland A's down two games to none to the Detroit Tigers in the AL Division Series after a 5-4 loss Sunday, they return home with their top starter, Brett Anderson, likely to go in Game 3 on Tuesday.

Manager Bob Melvin said that the A's would not make it official until Monday because they want to be sure Anderson is feeling entirely ready, but the team also wants to use Anderson "sooner than later," Melvin added.

Anderson missed the final two weeks of the regular season with a right oblique strain, an injury that usually takes a month or more of recovery time. The left-hander believes that because it was more of a gradual discomfort rather than a sudden pull that the injury was caught before it became really serious.

Anderson threw a bullpen session Saturday, and he was feeling good Sunday, so the A's are encouraged that he will be OK for Game 3.

"Our backs are against the wall," Anderson said. "I've got all winter to rest. As long as I'm not hurting the team, I'll just put some Icy Hot on it and I'll be fine."

If not, rookie right-hander A.J. Griffin would pitch Tuesday and Anderson would start Game 4 on Wednesday -- if the A's can avoid getting swept in the best-of-five series.
