A's Anderson out for the rest of regular season

Oakland A's left-handed pitcher Brett Anderson will be out for the rest of the regular season with an oblique strain, manager Bob Melvin said Thursday.

"He is not going to pitch the rest of the (regular) season," Melvin said after Thursday's 12-4 victory over Detroit. "He has a Grade II strain. We've been pretty consistent in being able to match up, whether it's lineups or pitchers. We do have some pitching depth."

It's uncertain whether Anderson might return if the A's reach the playoffs.

Dan Straily is expected to start in Anderson's place on Monday in Texas.

Anderson left in the third inning of Wednesday's loss to the Tigers with soreness in his oblique. That was just the sixth start of the season for Anderson, who is returning from Tommy John surgery.

He had allowed only two earned runs over his first 26 innings, but yielded eight runs to the Angels and Tigers in his past two outings combined.
