Americans Abroad roundup: Altidore starts the season on fire

With many European leagues already in swing, The English leagues kicked off over the weekend and while several Americans were in action, there were a few big name omissions. The German and Italian leagues start up next weekend so watch out for reports on Jermaine Jones and Fabian Johnson among others.

Altidore notches two braces to start the season

Jozy Altidore now has four goals in two Eredivisie games this season after scoring twice on Sunday during a 3-1 win over SC Heracles Almelo. The AZ man opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Roy Beerens crossed into the box allowing the striker to coolly tap in. Leading 2-1 late, Altidore put on the finishing touches when he pounced on a cleared ball and fired in a low shot into the left corner of the net. The 22-year-old is currently atop the Eredivisie goal-scorers list.

Matt Taylor shocks Werder Bremen

Third-division club Preussen Muenster knocked Bundesliga side Werder Bremen out of the German Cup over the weekend by a score of 4-2. American midfielder Matt Taylor notched a hat trick and an assist during the contest. The 30-year-old had two goals after 90 minutes but once the game went into extra time, his clutch gene truly kicked in. Taylor provided the game-winning assist when he set up Dima Nazarov before finishing off his hat-trick in the 118th minute.

Michael Bradley scores in friendly

The Roma midfielder scored a goal during the club’s 3-0 win over Aris FC over the weekend. In its final preseason game, the Serie A powerhouse looked strong as Pablo Osvaldo and Mattia Destro also scored goals. The 25-year-old American’s strike came off a Rodrigo Taddei cross. Roma opens up Serie A play on Sunday against Catania.

Dempsey sits out

News broke last week that Clint Dempsey refused to play for Fulham in its opening Premier League match against Norwich City. The prolific American scorer has been quiet for most of the summer but reportedly wants a transfer to a Champions League club. The fact that he’s still attached to Craven Cottage is an issue and a swift resolution certainly seems necessary. Fulham ran all over the Canaries 5-0 in Dempsey’s absence.

Spurs outclassed up north

Newcastle United outplayed Tottenham on Saturday as the Tyneside club prevailed 2-1 behind goals from Demba Ba and Hatem Ben Arfa. Ba curled in a brilliant ball just after halftime that Brad Friedel had no chance at stopping but Jermain Defoe hit back for Tottenham 20 minutes later. However, a costly foul led to a penalty kick which Ben Arfa converted in the 80th minute. Friedel dove the wrong way and only managed one save throughout the contest.

Cameron debut delayed

Geoff Cameron’s Premier League debut has been put on pause for now as he encountered some red tape last week. The defender was sent back to the United States to verify his identity in regards to his UK work permit. Stoke drew 1-1 against Reading without him.

Guzan and Lichaj sit

Both Brad Guzan and Eric Lichaj dressed for Saturday’s loss to West Ham but neither got any playing time. Lichaj should feature for Aston Villa at some point but Guzan will likely need to catch a break to supplant Shay Given in goal.

Bocanegra plays in Scottish third division

Carlos Bocanegra suited up for Rangers on Saturday as the now division three club trounced East Stirlingshire 5-1 behind an Andrew Little hat trick. The experienced defender is still plugging away and will remain in Scotland at least for the time being.
