Roberto Martinez: Tim Howard deserves the headline for penalty save

Tim Howard made his long-awaited return to Goodison Park on Saturday, making four saves as Everton squeaked by Stoke 1-0. The U.S. international missed over a month with a back injury, but looked great on Saturday, stopping shots from Robert Huth and Jonathan Walters. The keeper also set up Everton’s only goal in the 28th minute when he punched a ball all the way to Kevin Mirallas, who ran the length of the field to score the winner.

Guzan solid for Villains in defeat

Brad Guzan started on Sunday and made five saves as Aston Villa blew a halftime lead to lose 2-1 against Liverpool. After Jordan Henderson equalized in the 47th minute, Luis Suarez drew a penalty in the 60th, which allowed Steven Gerrard to give Liverpool the lead for good. For his part, Guzan was able to save shots from Suarez and Gerrard as Aston Villa fell back into the relegation zone with the loss.

Friedel starts as Spurs climb up the table

Brad Friedel started on Saturday and played well, making two saves as Tottenham bested Swansea City 2-1 on the road. The keeper notably halted attempts from Nathan Dyer and Dwight Tiendalli while Gareth Bale led the Tottenham attack. Clint Dempsey was not dressed for the contest, as he came down with the flu while with the U.S. on international duty.

Altidore scoreless in victory

Jozy Altidore started on Sunday and played an average contest, picking up a yellow card while failing to score as AZ defeated SC Heracles Almelo 2-1.

Bradley goes unused in defeat

Michael Bradley was dressed on Saturday but did not get on the field as Roma lost at Palermo 2-0.

Jones out with injury

Jermaine Jones, who missed the World Cup qualifier against Mexico with an ankle injury, did not play on Saturday as Schalke 04 defeated Hoffenheim 3-0.

Cameron starts while Shea out for Stoke

Geoff Cameron started and played 79 minutes while Brek Shea was not included in the side as Sroke lost to Everton 1-0 on Saturday. Cameron was relatively quiet during the contest, except in the first half when he was badly beaten by Kevin Mirallas for the game's only goal.

Williams and Johnson start for Hoffenheim

Both Danny Williams and Fabian Johnson started on Saturday but Hoffenheim was dominated 3-0 by Schalke. Johnson came off midway through the second half while Williams played the entire contest and was definitely the more aggressive American between the two. The midfielder took one shot but was also involved in quite a few tackles in the middle of the pitch.

Chandler plays well in draw

Timothy Chandler started and took a few shots at the keeper on Sunday as Nurnberg battled back from 2-0 down, drawing 2-2 against Vfl Wolfsburg.

Boyd notches assist in loss

Terrence Boyd played well on Saturday as Rapid Vienna fell to SV Josko Ried 3-2. The striker tested the keeper a few times but could not make the break through. With his team down 3-1, Boyd teed up teammate Demi Alar for a goal in the 90th minute but it was too little too late.
