Sacha Kljestan helped Anderlecht lift the club’s 32nd league title as it held closest competitor Zulte Waregem to a 1-1 draw on Sunday. The win automatically enters the club into the group stage of the 2013-14 Champions League. Kljestan played well but was instrumental on Thursday, scoring the opening goal in the 25th minute by heading in from close range as Anderlecht defeated KSC Lokeren 4-2.
Kljestan, who has been with the club since June of 2010, now has two league titles on his resume in addition to the 2012 Belgian Super Cup.
Howard saves four as Everton loses
David Moyes’ Everton career ended in defeat on Sunday as the Merseyside club fell to Chelsea 2-1. Fernando Torres sunk the Toffees late, giving Chelsea third place in the top flight. Tim Howard made four saves but allowed Torres’ first Premier League goal of 2013 in the 76th minute. Everton finished the season in sixth place, nine points out of European competition.
Dempsey misses Champions League by one point
Tottenham defeated Sunderland 1-0 on Sunday thanks to Gareth Bale’s 89th minute wonder strike, but Spurs were denied as they finished one point behind Arsenal for the final Champions League spot. Clint Dempsey played 73 productive minutes and was dangerous at times, however, in the end, the London outfit's win was only able to secure another trip to the Europa League.
Bradley helps Roma to victory
Michael Bradley started and played well on Sunday as Roma defeated Napoli 2-1. Unfortunately for the capital outfit, it did not qualify for European play, finishing sixth in Serie A. The club will take on Lazio next week in a Roman battle for the Coppa Italia.
Jones heading to Champions League
Schalke 04 finished fourth in the Bundesliga on Saturday as the club defeated SC Freiburg 2-1. With the sides knotted at 1-1, Jermaine Jones’ laser of a shot ricocheted off Freiburg’s Immanuel Holm, whose attempted clearance hit his own teammate Julian Schuster and went in for an own goal.
Cherundolo helps send Fortuna Dusseldorf down
Steve Cherundolo played nine minutes on Saturday as Hannover 96 dominated Fortuna Dusseldorf 3-0, condemning the opposition to the second division starting next season. Hannover finished a respectable ninth in the table.
Villa stays alive
Aston Villa finished the season five points clear of the relegation zone to finish 15th after drawing 2-2 with Wigan on Sunday. Wigan had been relegated with a loss to Arsenal earlier in the week, and will head to the Championship next season. Brad Guzan played well for the Villains, making three saves. Eric Lichaj was not dressed for the contest.
Cameron grabs assist as Stoke stays up
Geoff Cameron started and played the entire contest as Stoke drew 1-1 with Southampton to finish 13th in the table. The right back assisted Peter Crouch's goal with a pinpoint cross from the right flank. The Potters will remain in the top flight for another season.
Hoffenheim heading to relegation playoffs
Fabian Johnson started and played the entire contest on Saturday as Hoffenheim secured a dramatic 2-1 away victory at Borussia Dortmund to qualify for the Bundesliga promotion/relegation playoff. Hoffenheim will take on the third placed team from the 2. Bundesliga, Kaiserslautern, on May 23 and 27 for a place in the Bundesliga next season.
