Jozy Altidore scored his 29th and 30th goals of the season on Friday, as AZ blasted Heerenveen 4-0. The striker bookended the tenacious attack, scoring the opening goal in the 29th minute and the final goal in the 65th. The first goal came via a header off his own rebound, while his second was scored on a pretty 26-yard free kick. Altidore also provided a lovely backheel assist during the blowout.
The victory moved AZ nine points clear of the relegation zone, which all but ensures that the club will continue playing in the Eredivisie next season.
Howard notches easy clean sheet
Tim Howard had an easy day on Saturday as he failed to record a save during Everton’s 1-0 win over a hapless Fulham side. The Cottagers mustered just six total shots, none of which tested Howard. The win keeps the Toffees' European hopes alive.
Dempsey starts in exciting affair
Clint Dempsey started on Saturday and tested the goalkeeper three times as Tottenham and Wigan played to a riveting 2-2 draw. Both sides traded goals early and late in the game but in the end it was all square. Gareth Bale, Tom Huddlestone, and Jermain Defoe all had chances late for Spurs and Dempsey nearly created a last gasp opportunity, but in the end Spurs remained in fifth place one point out of fourth.
Guzan has tough game against United
Brad Guzan’s week started off rocky as he and Aston Villa were blitzed 3-0 by Manchester United. The keeper made just one save as Robin Van Persie notched a hat trick to clinch the Premier League title for the hosts.
Bradley starts for Roma
Michael Bradley started on Sunday and played the full 90 as Roma trounced Siena 4-0 behind Pablo Osvaldo’s hat trick. The Serie A giant kept its European aspirations alive as the club sits just two points back of a Europa League place.
Jones plays well in blowout win
Jermaine Jones started on Sunday and played 81 minutes as Schalke defeated Hamburg 4-1. The midfielder looked solid but wasn’t heavily involved in any of the goals. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar bagged a hat trick for Schalke.
Cameron subs in during win
Geoff Cameron came on in the 62nd minute on Saturday and helped preserve a slim lead as Stoke bested Norwich City 1-0. Once again, Brek Shea did not make the gameday 18.
Johnson crucial in Hoffenheim victory
Fabian Johnson started and played a great game on Saturday as Hoffenheim defeated Nurnberg 2-1. The crafty player tested the keeper early before providing a huge assist in the 11th minute. Johnson sent in a nice cross which Tobias Weis slotted into the net to give Hoffenheim an early lead. The hosts held on for the three points which will prove to be vital as the club fights to stave off relegation. Danny Williams was not on the matchday roster.
Chandler starts in loss
Timothy Chandler started and played the entire contest on Saturday but Nurnberg was outclassed 2-1 by Hoffenheim.
Edu starts in draw
Maurice Edu started and picked up a yellow card on Saturday as Bursaspor drew 1-1 with Akhisar Bld.
