Cameron starts for Stoke
Geoff Cameron made his long-awaited Premier League debut on Sunday as he helped Stoke secure a valuable point against Arsenal. The defender was active early, threading a few nice passes as the Potters started off brightly but the Gunners dominated possession and shots throughout the contest. In the end neither side was able to convert as the match ended 0-0.
Howard helps Everton to strong start
The Toffees opened their Barclays Premier League campaign with a bang, grabbing two wins last week over Manchester United and Aston Villa. Everton shocked United on Monday as Marouane Fellaini bagged the winner in the 57th minute. Howard made four stops and denied Wayne Rooney on two of those occasions. It was first time in five seasons that Everton won its first game of the season and the first time since 2008 that United did not.
On Saturday, the Merseyside club dominated Aston Villa 3-1 behind goals from Steven Pienaar, Fellaini, and Nikica Jelavic. Howard was only forced into one save but did allow a Karim El Ahmadi goal late.
Eric Lichaj makes season debut
23-year-old defender Eric Lichaj received his first action of the season on Saturday, playing the final 30 minutes against Everton. Despite the loss, Lichaj was impressive, as he set up the Villains' only goal when he found El Ahmadi in the 75th minute.
Altidore cools down
Jozy Altidore’s fire dimmed on Sunday as he played an uninspired 81 minutes during a 0-0 draw with Heerenveen. Earlier in the week, AZ Alkmaar dropped the first leg of its Europa League tie, losing 1-0 on the road to Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala. Altidore played the full 90 but was unable to make the breakthrough. The return leg will be played on Thursday.
Bradley makes Serie A debut in whirlwind affair
AS Roma started out the season with a 2-2 draw against Catania on Sunday as both clubs shied away from defending. Michael Bradley started and played the entire contest as Roma went down 2-1 midway through the second stanza. However, Bradley helped save a point for the hosts when he found Nicolas Lopez in the 90th minute for the equalizer.
Dempsey remains out
The saga rages on at Craven Cottage as Clint Dempsey continues to sit out for Fulham. Dempsey hasn’t been with the team and maintains that he would like a transfer. Fulham recently complained to the Premier League about Liverpool’s pursuit of the Texas native, but a resolution is clearly not close. The Cottagers lost to Manchester United 3-2 on Saturday.
Spurs blow one late
Despite dominating the match and going up 1-0 late, Tottenham ultimately had to settle for a draw as James Morrison equalized for West Brom during injury time. Brad Friedel was solid through most of the contest, halting five shots through 90 minutes, but 30 seconds into injury time Morrison swept up a William Gallas clearance and fired one past Friedel.
TSG Hoffenheim stumbles down the stretch
Fabian Johnson made his season debut on Saturday, playing the full 90 as TSG Hoffenheim lost 2-1 to Borussia Monchengladbach. Juan Arango scored the go-ahead goal for the hosts late via a crisp free-kick after Marvin Compper committed the costly foul.
Jones notches assist for Schalke 04
Despite blowing the lead late, Schalke 04 picked up a valuable road point on Sunday as the Bundesliga season kicked off. Jermaine Jones started and did well controlling the pace for the visitors. He helped Schalke take a second-half lead when he found Lewis Holtby in the 64th minute who converted a header.
Maurice Edu signs with Stoke City
Stoke City acquired Edu from Rangers and the U.S. international has reportedly signed a three-year contract. Unable to complete all the necessary paperwork before Sunday’s clash, Edu could suit up for next week’s fixture against Wigan Athletic.
