American survived Lafayette's second-half rally to snap the Leopards' three-game winning streak with a surprising 68-64 Patriot League victory on Saturday at American's Bender Arena in Washington, D.C.

The Eagles snapped a two-game losing skid of their own to improve to 8-14 overall and 3-4 in the Patriot, while Lafayette fell to 11-13 and 4-3.

American's Stephen Lumpkins led all scorers with 24 points and nine rebounds. Daniel Munoz scored 12 points and John Schoof 11.

Lafayette was paced by Seth Hinrichs' 18 points. Bryce Scott chipped in with 17 and Dan Trist finished with 12.

American held a 33-16 lead at one point early in the second half, then the Eagles held off a furious 34-17 Lafayette charge that tied the score 50-50 with 7:40 left. Munoz scored American's final four points to clinch it, scoring on a layup and a pair of free throws with 21 seconds to play.

American took a 29-16 lead into halftime. Lumpkins' three-point play ended a 20-5 American tear that broke an 11-9 Lafayette lead, the Leopards' last. Lumpkins had 10 points by the half.

Lafayette started cold, got momentarily hot then went frigid again. The Leopards made just 1 of 8 shots in the first eight minutes then made 3 of 4 to go ahead 11-9. Lafayette closed the half by making just 2 of 11 shots for 26 percent shooting.
