Altidore sets goal mark for Americans abroad with latest tally

Jozy Altidore's season is not only a personal best, but now it is a best for any American abroad ever.

The U.S. national team forward struck for his 24th goal in all competitions Sunday as part of AZ Alkmaar's 2-1 loss at RKC Waalwijk. In doing so, he broke the mark of 23 goals set by Clint Dempsey at Fulham last season, which was the most any American abroad had ever scored.

Altidore started the goal-scoring sequence by carrying the ball down the left sideline before passing and continuing his run toward the area. He was played through into the box by Adam Maher and connected for a deft left-footed chip over Waalwijk goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet to level the score at 1-1 in the 69th minute.

The host side hit for the eventual winner through Mart Lieder seven minutes later, though. As a result, AZ's tumble down the Eredivisie table continued, with the club extending its league winless stretch to five games. AZ sits in 15th place, just three points clear of Roda JC and VVV Venlo, who are in the relegation playoff zone.

As for Altidore, the goal was his 17th in league play and his fourth in his last four games. His brace and assist against Ajax in the KNVB Beker semifinals earlier in the week helped AZ to a place in the domestic cup final, where it will play PSV Eindhoven in the final on May 9.
