Aldon Smith sets 'Monday Night Football' record for sacks

National Football Post

Aldon Smith set the “Monday Night Football” record for sacks in a game with 5 ½, the most the Chicago Bears have ever surrendered to a single defender in franchise history.

Smith was a one-man wrecking crew as he accounted for 5 ½ of the San Francisco 49ers’ six sacks in a 32-7 demolition of the Bears at Candlestick Park. In the process, Smith took over the NFL lead for sacks this season with 15, giving himself a chance at Michael Strahan’s NFL record. Smith will need 7 ½ sacks in the final seven games to tie Strahan. It could come in the season finale against the Arizona Cardinals at Candlestick Park. The Cardinals have surrendered 44 sacks – most in the NFL.

Smith also thrust himself into the discussion for the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award. He already has one more sack than he had as a rookie a year ago.

“I really just try to make people respect my power,” the outside linebacker said. “I don’t think I’m one of the bigger linebackers or ends, but I want people to know there’s some power in here too.”

There is something about the bright lights of Monday night that gets Smith going too. Ten of his 29 career sacks have come on Mondays.

“I have a thing for night games. I love playing at night. I love the lights,” he said.

Smith moved two sacks ahead of Denver’s Von Miller for the NFL lead. He said he planned to text Miller about the situation as he left the stadium. It shapes up to be a fun race for the league lead and Houston’s J.J. Watt isn’t far off either.
