Al Michaels arrested on DUI charge

The SportsXchange

After being stopped at a Santa Monica, Callf., DUI checkpoint on Friday night, sports broadcaster Al Michaels was booked into jail and spent about five hours there before he was released on his own recognizance early Saturday morning, according to multiple reports.

"He was evaluated for suspicion of DUI, brought to the station for a Breathalyzer test and it came out .08, which was at the legal limit, so he was released on a citation at about 3 or 4 in the morning," Santa Monica police Sgt. William Heric told City News Service.

According to the Los Angeles Times, "(Michaels) was cooperative and polite the whole time.''

Michaels has worked for NBC Sports since 2006 as the play-by-play announcer for Sunday night NFL games. Before joining NBC, he was in the Monday Night Football booth for 20 years while at ABC and ESPN. Michaels also is well known for his legendary "Miracle on Ice" call at the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid, N.Y., when the U.S. team upset Russia and for working the 1989 Earthquake-interrupted World Series.

"We are aware of the situation," NBC said in a statement to "We have been in contact with Al. We have no further comment at this time."

Michaels is scheduled to appear in Los Angeles Municipal Court on June 26.
