Akron University star point guard Alex Abreu was arrested Thursday on charges of trafficking in marijuana and possession of marijuana.
Abreu was suspended indefinitely from the Akron basketball team, pending the outcome of the investigation, leaving the Zips' at-large NCAA Tournament chances in question.
According to police reports, Abreu was booked into county jail after narcotics unit detectives seized more than five pounds of marijuana from an Akron residence where Abreu was located. If convicted, both charges come with a third-degree felony.
In 29 games with the Zips this season, Abreu averaged 10.3 points, 6.0 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game. The 5-10 junior was the catalyst for a team that recently clinched its second straight Mid-American Conference regular-season title. Akron (24-5) was the favorite to win the MAC tournament, but event if the team fell short it was expected to earn an automatic bid based on its regular-season resume.
The Zips will now turn to two inexperienced backups to run the point during the MAC tournament, which kicks off Monday at campus sites.
