Ajax Cape Town CEO George Comitis says there has been contact with representatives of the Los Angeles Galaxy about a game at the Cape Town Stadium, but as yet the fixture is not confirmed.
"There has been some contact but nothing has been finalized yet. There is a great chance to play them on Dec. 12 and definitely we would be happy to host a team of such stature if that opportunity avails itself," Comitis says.
LA Galaxy are looking for a post-season tour after they play Houston Dynamo in the MLS Cup on Saturday.
They did have plans to head to Australia, but these have been shelved and Cape Town has emerged as a possibility.
The Urban Warriors are keen to host the club and have even waived an appearance fee if LA Galaxy are able to deliver former England international David Beckham to the game.
Although Beckham’s final official fixture for the Los Angeles side before his exit will be against Houston Dynamo, his contract with the club only finishes at the end of the year.
The organizers of the tour have asked for a proposal on playing in Cape Town but want the fixture to have a high profile and be a crowd puller. That would make Beckham’s appearance a must to give the game both an attraction for fans to visit the stadium, as well as a bigger TV audience.
LA Galaxy toured Australia at the end of the 2011 season after being crowned MLS champions, with Beckham playing in matches down under.
