Packers part ways with Woodson
Green Bay defensive back Charles Woodson was released Friday after spending seven years with the Packers.
Woodson, 36, won the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year award in 2009 and was All-Pro twice during his time with the Packers.
"We are grateful for all that Charles has given to the Green Bay Packers over the past seven years," general manager Ted Thompson said. "He has been an integral part of the Packers' success and our Super Bowl title in 2010 would not have been possible without his contributions.
"A once-in-a-generation talent as a player, he is also a great leader and ambassador for the organization off the field. Charles will always be a member of the Packers family and we look forward to his eventual induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame."
Woodson, a former Heisman Trophy winner who played for the Raiders before joining Green Bay, set franchise records for defensive touchdowns and interceptions returned for TDs, and his 38 interceptions rank fourth in franchise history.
"We are grateful for all that "It's part of the business," agent Carl Poston told NFL.com. "I just talked to him. He sounds like he has a lot of football left. He'd like to go play for a contender, win another Super Bowl."
Woodson was due $9 million in 2013 and would have counted $10 million against the salary cap.
The 14-year veteran moved to safety last season and was limited to seven games and one interception.
