African-American driver gets ride in Truck Series

The SportsXchange

Darrell Wallace Jr. will become the third full-time African-American driver in NASCAR history when he competes in the Truck Series for Kyle Busch Motorsports in 2013, according to a report.

A news conference is planned for Saturday at the NASCAR Hall of Fame to make an official announcement that Wallace will drive the No. 54 truck this year, ESPN reported Friday.

The 19-year-old Wallace drove in the K&N Pro Series East for Joe Gibbs Raicing from 2010 to 2012, winning a race in 2010. He competed in four Nationwide Series races last season, finishing in the top 10 three times and winning a pole at Dover.

Wallace follows Wendell Scott and Bill Lester as the only black drivers to run full time in a national NASCAR series.

Scott was part in NASCAR's top series from 1961 to 1971. He won one race, in 1964 in Jacksonville, Fla.

Lester drove in 142 Truck Series races from 2002 to 2006 and posted seven top-10 finishes.
