Things are heating up between Coach Wanderlei Silva and Coach Vitor Belfort on "The Ultimate Fighter Brazil". After getting used to the subtitles and the difficult to pronounce names, I'm enjoying watching the show online because the fights have been good. The pranks have been kept to a minimum and good sportsmanship is evident.
The most interesting verbal battle took place on episode seven, after Wanderlei's team achieved their first win--finally--with Rony Jason defeating his good friend, Gasparzinho, by breaking his arm early in the first round.
Wanderlei was visibly upset that Vitor had pitted these two friends against each other when he could have made a different match-up. Vitor tried to explain himself (loudly), but Wanderlei wasn't listening. Referee Mario Yamasaki kept himself positioned between the two coaches to make sure neither one started swinging punches.
Wanderlei complains constantly about Vitor talking too much. Vitor is prone to speech-making in an effort to motivate his team. He showed respect to all of Wanderlei's fighters who lost after each battle. I like Vitor's pontificating, but it's getting on Wanderlei's nerves.
Should two friends fight?
These two friends are on opposite teams. They might have ended up fighting each other in the finale. Wanderlei made a concession for the "UFC contract" fight--if they were fighting for the contract, then it's OK for friends to fight. He was mad at Vitor for having them fight each other too early.
Looking at the situation from the outside, Vitor put as much pressure on his own fighter as he did on Wanderlei's. Gasparzinho suffered a broken arm rather than tap. He didn't make less of an effort because he was fighting a friend. It happens. Just ask UFC champion, Jon "Bones" Jones and former UFC champion, Rashad Evans.
At least Rony and Gasparzinho will continue to be friends. Only time will tell if Rashad will decide to be friends--or at least friendly--with his former training partner, Jon Jones, ever again.
Did someone mention Jon Jones?
John Morgan also known by his Twitter handle @MMAjunkieJohn tweeted, "TUF Brazil: Rony 'Jason' says if he had 30% of the strength of his mom, he could beat JDS and Jon Jones. God bless the passion of these men."
Former UFC champion Lyoto Machida visited and was warmly received by both teams as he dropped words of wisdom and encouragement on the fighters.
Soon there will be a TUF India show which should be good news to the Super Fight League people. They'll have a steady stream of fighters who've been trained by top notch coaching staffs during their stint on the next international version of the show to choose from.
I heard that Australia is having a UK vs Ozzie version that should be really good. Probably both sides will need sub-titles to be understood by an American audience--or anyone else who can't understand Brits and Australians when they speak.
Speaking of British fighters...
On TUF Live, Andy Ogle defeated Mike Rios in a massive upset. Knowing how emotional Ogle was in the days leading up to the fight, I loved watching Ogle win--a British fighter with a submission win (RNC). Sweetness. video
Dana White says Dominick Cruz will continue as a coach despite a torn ACL. Tough break for Dominick. Plus he lost the coach's challenge to Urijah. This coach's challenge was the best one yet. They ran a military style obstacle course complete with launching grenades, climbing ropes, shooting jugs, running and then more shooting. Things blew up. It was close, but Urijah won in the end...and he will fight for the interim championship belt while Dominick is recuperating.
Maybe Dominick was distracted, thinking about that $20,000 stack of greenbacks, that he lost to Urijah--when he tore his ACL. With Urijah fighting, while he's on the couch watching TV, Dominick is in for a lot more distracting thoughts.
