Titans may have birthday present for Abraham
As former Atlanta Falcons defensive end John Abraham turned 35 years old Monday, the former first-round pick not only retracted mention of retirement but was attempting to sign with the Tennessee Titans.
Abraham worked out for the Titans last week, and he and the team are working to seal a deal, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Last Saturday night, Abraham tweeted "Retiring 13" and "Done." Then he deleted the tweets.
On Monday, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport confirmed that Abraham said there was "nothing to" those Saturday tweets.
Abraham was the 13th player selected in the 2000 draft, by the New York Jets. He collected 68.5 sacks in the last seven years with the Falcons, but was released on March 1 and has visited Denver, Seattle, New England and Tennessee, but has no offers.
Abraham's release saved the Falcons $5.75 million. He could have left as a free agent in 2012, but re-signed last March for three years and $16.72 million.
The road back to Atlanta became rougher each week as the Falcons signed former New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora and drafted two defensive ends -- Malliciah Goodman (fourth round) and Stansly Maponga (fifth round).
But Abraham is still a fan favorite and the Falcons faithful have been putting pressure on the team to get him back.
"We never say never," Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said. "There is a lot on the horizon. We have some decisions to make across the organization, but we never say never as far as acquiring or bringing people back."
Now the Titans may have something to say about Abraham's chances of returning to Atlanta.
