76ers make bold moves on draft night

The SportsXchange

The Philadelphia 76ers wanted a big man. They got one, along with a young combo forward who team president Rod Thorn claimed was the brain trust's unanimous choice at No. 15.

Selecting St. John's forward Moe Harkless was a surprise, considering the team's need for a big man and the depth of quality power forward/centers. Then they got Arnett Moultrie, a solid center/power forward from Mississippi State by acquiring the 27th pick from the luxury tax-paying Miami Heat for No. 45 and a future first-rounder that's protected through the lottery for "a number of years," according to Thorn.

The Sixers are hoping Harkless and Moultrie will both crack coach Doug Collins' rotation as rookies, but they won't know if that's realistic until they get through training camp and the preseason.

"We think we've added two players who could be very good for us and significant assets to our team," Thorn said.

Thorn claimed the Sixers had Harkless ranked among the top eight players in the draft and Moultrie in the top 10.

Harkless, who was expected to go in the late teens or 20s, shot just .202 from three-point range in his only year at St. John's but hit 37 of 50 from beyond the arc in his workout for the Sixers.

"Our people felt this kid has too much talent to pass up," Thorn said.

The Sixers considered a bunch of trades involving players, only to decide not to pull the trigger on any of them.

Also, Thorn said the Sixers would like to re-sign unrestricted free agents Lou Williams and Spencer Hawes.
