7 Freebies You Can Grab in December

‘Tis the season to be jolly! And what could make you more merry and bright than scoring a few freebies throughout December?

Most of the gratis items we highlight during this most joyous month have a holiday theme. You’ll find everything from free food to free shipping on purchases. And even the Scrooges among us are unlikely to say “Bah humbug!” to Apple’s free computer coding workshop.

Following are seven freebies you can grab during December.

Free photo of Santa and your kids: Through Christmas Eve

If your children have been nice — or even if they’ve been a little bit naughty — they’ll want to share their gift list with Santa. Bass Pro Shops is offering a free 4-by-6-inch studio-quality photo of Mr. Claus and your kiddo throughout the holiday season. Most local Bass Pro Shops say the offer is good through Dec. 24, but check with your location to be sure.

If your Bass Pro Shops location has a restaurant, you’ll also get a free kids entree with every photo.

Free holiday crafts for kids: Dec. 3

Another way to get your kids in the holiday spirit is to attend one of two complimentary holiday craft workshops on Dec. 3.

At Home Depot, kids can create their own Gingerbread Man Candy Dish from 9 a.m. to noon. They also will receive a certificate of achievement, a workshop apron and a commemorative pin.

Meanwhile, Lowe’s is hosting a Christmas ornament workshop for kids beginning at 10 a.m. Participants also will receive a free workshop apron, goggles and patch.

Free Apple coding workshop: Dec. 5-11

GE CEO Jeff Immelt famously said all new employees should learn to code, regardless of their job function. If you agree that his words are wise, Apple is offering two free one-hour workshops:

  • Learn the fundamentals of code. This workshop is for adults and kids who have basic iPad skills, but are new to coding.

  • Write your first line of code. This workshop teaches kids to write code using an Apple programming language called Swift.

To find a workshop at an Apple store near you, visit the Apple website.

Free photo of your pet with Santa: Dec. 10-11

Was Fido on his or her best behavior throughout 2016? Reward that pup — or your favorite feline — with a visit to Santa at PetSmart. From noon to 4 p.m. on Dec. 10 and Dec. 11, you can get a free photo with Santa and your favorite furry friend.

Find your local PetSmart at the retailer’s website.

Free lunch with Santa: Dec. 11

Santa Claus is coming to town, and he’s bringing a gift of free lunch for your little one. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 11, your child can meet Santa at participating White Castle locations and get a free My Size Meal.

The limit is four children per adult. To find a location near you, check out the White Castle website.

Free shipping: Dec. 16

If you love online shopping – but hate paying those pesky shipping fees – it might be best to wait until Dec. 16 to buy your holiday gifts. On that day, hundreds of retailers will offer gratis shipping as part of Free Shipping Day.

Participants agree to provide free shipping on all orders, regardless of size. They also pledge to have the orders to your house by Christmas Eve.

To find a list of all the participating retailers, visit the official Free Shipping Day website. Keep in mind that some retailers do not reveal their participation in the program until the day of the event. So it will may pay to check the site once again on Dec. 16.

Free ride home: Dec. 31

New Year’s Eve is the night of celebration. If you become a little too tipsy, make sure to avail yourself of the free ride services that will be offered in cities from coast to coast.

Each year, public transportation is free on New Year’s Eve in cities such as Los Angeles, Boston and Denver, Money magazine reports. Check with your city’s transportation department to find out if a similar service will be available to you.

AAA offered its Holiday Safe Ride Program on Thanksgiving, and is sure to do so again for New Year’s Eve. AAA also offers a comprehensive list of sober-ride programs throughout the country. Click your state’s link to learn more, and have a safe and happy holiday!
