5 Significant Winning Streaks that the New Orleans Hornets Ended

Yahoo Contributor Network

COMMENTARY | Unfortunately, the New Orleans Hornets will not have an opportunity to end the Miami Heat's epic winning streak on Friday, March 29. The Chicago Bulls ended the Heat's winning streak at 27 games. However, the Hornets have put a stop to several long winning streaks since the franchise relocated to New Orleans.

Take a look back at five significant NBA winning streaks that the New Orleans Hornets ended.

2003-04 Los Angeles Lakers (seven-game winning streak)

The Lakers finished the 2002-03 regular season with two wins and began the following season with five more wins. However, after a grueling 2OT win versus the San Antonio Spurs the night before, the Lakers fell to Tim Floyd's Hornets 114-95. New Orleans held Kobe Bryant to 11 points while Baron Davis scored 23 points and tallied 12 assists for the Hornets. The win improved the Hornets' record to 5-1 to open the season.

2003-04 Detroit Pistons (eight-game winning streak)

During the 2003-04 season, New Orleans defeated the eventual NBA champion Pistons three times out of four games. The Hornets' 82-81 victory on March 23 put a stop to the Pistons' eight-game winning streak. David Wesley led the Hornets with 19 points on 3-4 shooting on three-pointers while New Orleans' stifling defense held the Pistons to 41.9 percent shooting from the field.

2010-11 San Antonio Spurs (eight-game winning streak)

The 2010-11 Spurs had several long winning streaks on their way to a 61-21 record. Their Southwest Division rivals in New Orleans ended their eight-game winning streak in January in grand fashion by a score of 96-72. Infamous for benching his stars on a whim, Gregg Popovich actually played all his key starters in this game, but to no avail. In ending the Spurs' winning streak, the Hornets extended their own winning streak to eight games.

2011-12 New York Knicks (seven-game winning streak, "Linsanity")

The uproar over the emergence of Jeremy Lin with the Knicks in the 2011-12 season was one of the most extraordinary stories of the year in the NBA. After winning seven straight games, Lin and the Knicks did not expect to receive much resistance from the 7-22 Hornets in Madison Square Garden. Lin's five assists were not enough as Greivis Vasquez notched 11 assists in New Orleans' 89-85 upset win.

2012-13 Denver Nuggets (15-game winning streak)

Although dwarfed by the Heat's epic 27-game winning streak, the Nuggets set a franchise record in winning 15 straight games of their own in the 2012-13 season. The Nuggets may have been looking past the Hornets to an upcoming road game versus the Spurs. Rookie PG Brian Roberts filled in for the injured Greivis Vasquez at PG and set a season high for assists among rookies with 18 in the Hornets' 110-86 win.
