49ers release RB Jacobs

The 49ers suspended RB Brandon Jacobs for the final three regular-season games of 2012, the team announced Monday.

By suspending Jacobs instead of releasing him, the Niners keep the veteran from joining another team.

Jacobs has played in two games this season and has five carries for seven yards. He signed with the 49ers this past offseason after seven years with the Giants. Last season, he rushed for 571 yards and had eight total touchdowns. He had 56 rushing scores in his career and a pair of 1,000-yard rushing seasons.

On Instagram, Jacobs wrote this week, “I am on this team rotting away so why would I wanna put any pics up of anything that say niners. This is by far the worst year I ever had, I’ll tell you like I told plenty others.”

According to Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, Jacobs posted that in response to fans wondering why he only posted photos of himself with the Giants.

Jim Harbaugh had no comment when asked about Jacobs’ status during his Monday press conference. Frank Gore is the 49ers’ leading rusher, and Anthony Dixon and LaMichael James are his backups with Kendall Hunter on injured reserve.
