Quacking on Yahoo Sports:

49ers' Okoye, Purcell saw alleged Brooks' assault

The SportsXchange

San Francisco 49ers rookies Lawrence Okoye and Michael Purcell were the two players who witnessed the June 8 incident in which linebacker Ahmad Brooks allegedly smashed teammate Lamar Divens in the head with a beer bottle, according to multiple reports.

Other than Brooks, the players face tenuous positions on the team, which may explain their hesitance to discuss the matter. Okoye is a British Olympian trying to earn a spot on an American football team. Purcell signed as an undrafted free agent and Divens played on the practice squad player in 2012.

Charges are pending against Brooks regarding the alleged assault, according to the San Jose Mercury-News. Also, the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office remains undecided on whether it will issue a warrant for Brooks' arrest and charge him with assault.

Divens needed three stitches after the alleged incident in which he was hit in the head three times with a bottle and punched in the face. He originally planned to pursue charges against Brooks, but changed his mind.

"Divens said this would be bad for both of their careers and that he just wanted to keep playing and that they had resolved it," according to the documents.

Brooks, 29, signed a six-year contract extension worth $44.5 million last year with the 49ers. An eight-year veteran, he had 46 tackles and one interception in 16 regular-season games last year. In the NFC Championship game, he knocked down a third-down pass to help stop an Atlanta Falcons drive in the 49ers' 28-24 win that gave them a Super Bowl berth.
