San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith spoke out for the first time since his arrested for making a false bomb threat at Los Angeles International Airport.

Smith, drafted seventh overall in 2011, remains a productive player. He has also consistently found trouble away from the field.

"Stay positive and always give your best effort, eventually you will overcome your immediate problems and find you are ready for greater tests," Smith said via Twitter.

Arrested April 13 at LAX, Smith posted $20,000 bail but remained quiet until Monday night. He is permitted to work out with the 49ers in their offseason program and has not been disciplined by the NFL while the county attorney weighs bringing formal charges against Smith for the airport incident.

An officer on the scene said Smith might have been drinking at the time.

Smith has a May 12 court date scheduled for felony gun charges and drunken driving.

He was away from the team to seek treatment for alcohol abuse for five games in 2013.

The 49ers picked up a one-year option to retain Smith through the 2015 season.

"I'm a firm believer in the humanistic approach to everything. You continue to work just like you would with any family member," general manager Trent Baalke said. "We're a family. You don't just open the door and toss people out of it. You continue to work until they leave you no choice. That's what we're going to do."
