49ers make new Kaepernick contract a priority

The SportsXchange

San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke wants an agreement on a new contract with quarterback Colin Kaepernick in place before the start of training camp in late July.

Kaepernick's agent, Scott Smith, has met with team president Paraag Marathe in preliminary negotiations and Baalke said the two sides will soon begin face-to-face talks.

"We're going to work extremely hard, very diligently in trying to get something done prior to training camp," Baalke said Tuesday at the NFL owners' meetings in Orlando, Fla. "That's the objective right now."

Kaepernick is scheduled to make $1.073 million in the final year of his original four-year contract. As it stands, backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert, acquired two weeks ago in a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars, will make twice as much with a $2.011 million guaranteed contract next season.

The 49ers currently have $3.991 million in salary-cap space. An additional $6.6 million will be available on June 1.
