According to The Sacramento Bee, the 49ers are expected to sign veteran OLB Clark Haggans on Sunday.
Haggans, 35, who started all 16 games last season at left outside linebacker for the Cardinals, was cut by Arizona on Friday. He has spent the past four seasons in the desert after playing his first eight NFL seasons with the Steelers. He has collected 46½ sacks in his career.
Haggans, who served time in a Pennsylvania prison in June after pleading guilty to extreme DUI from a 2011 DUI incident, is waiting to find out if he will be disciplined by the NFL, which reportedly is reviewing the matter.
The reported reason why the 49ers were looking for an outside linebacker is because backup Parys Haralson is injured and his status for Week One is still undetermined.
Haralson is one of three outside 'backers currently on the roster, backing up starters Aldon Smith and Ahmad Brooks. The 49ers, who cut three OLBs on Friday, will have to release a player to make room for Haggans.
