49ers exercise fifth-year option for Aldon Smith
After a lot of contemplation due to his off-field issues, the San Francisco 49ers have exercised the fifth-year option on troubled All-Pro outside linebacker Aldon Smith.
Smith is due a $9.754 million base salaryin 2015 that's guaranteed for injury only. It becomes fully guaranteed if he's on the roster on the first day of the 2015 league year.
Smith has a history of legal problems, but also has 42 career sacks.
He was arrested last month for making a fake bomb threat at Los Angeles International Airport.
It's a misdemeanor, but Smith could be facing a potential suspension under the NFL personal-conduct policy.
Smith went to a treatment facility last year.
