Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical:

49ers cut Shawntae Spencer

National Football Post

The San Francisco 49ers looked around to see if they could find a taker for Shawntae Spencer.

When they realized that wasn’t going to happen, the team cut bait with him. The veteran cornerback, who missed some time last season with injuries, was released today, the team announced. Originally a second-round pick in 2004, he made 72 career starts with the club.

“The 49ers would like to thank Shawntae for his eight years of service to the organization and the Bay Area community,” 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement released by the club. “He has always represented himself, his family and this organization with the utmost class. We wish him, and his family, the very best.”

The 30-year-old Spencer was due to earn $3.4 million this season, and the 49ers have re-signed Carlos Rogers and added Perrish Cox. The move clears $3 million in salary-cap room.
